This workshop involves employer expectations, understanding of terminology, legitimacy and guidelines on the completion of application forms.

The Hidden Job Market and Networking

Participants are introduced to all different methods of job search. The purpose of networking as a tool to access the hidden job market is reviewed and discussed.

How To Contact Employers

Participants are introduced to the concept of self-marketing. This involves discussion, role modeling and preparation of cold call “scripts”. Development of a brief introductory statement to be used as a base for networking and cold contacts is completed during this session. Participants are also introduced to various businesses, cultural and ethnic business directories (some in other languages) from which to develop a job leads list.

What To Expect When You Are Hired

Topics discussed: Employment Maintenance, Workplace Expectations and Employment Standards. Participants are provided with reference and resource materials.

Interview Practice

Includes Preparation, Typical Questions and Answers, Illegal Questions, Practical Application and Mock Interviews.

Discussion, role modelling, “games” and videotapes are used as tools to present information on making a positive first impression, personal presentation and interview readiness.

Typical Questions and Answers

Tips and hints for dealing with tough interview questions, behavior description interviewing and questions to ask an employer are topics discussed during this workshop.

Illegal Questions and Practical Application

Participants are given an opportunity to take note of possible responses directly related to their past experiences and record this information. Opportunities for role-play and discussions related to illegal questions and salary negotiations are covered in this workshop.

Mock Interviews

Participants are video recorded as part of the mock interview. This practical application of interview learning objectives provides participants with the chance to role play their responses to typical and illegal interview questions in a “true to life” session with an Employment Facilitator. A private feedback session is held with the client to review the interview sessions. If required, participants may be offered additional role-play opportunities.
