A very big thank you to our guests, community partners, supporters, clients and staff who came to make the day a huge success!

We worked in teams and came up with different ideas about how to represent the barriers in a drawing. Some groups represented the barriers as rocks falling across our road, another group used a mountain as a barrier, other groups used water to represent flooding and another group used tombstones because they felt “buried” by the barriers, stress and life experiences they’d had.

Then we came up with many different ways we get support to help us get around or through or over these barriers. Supports are represented by a bridge, a boat, a ladder, a detour, balloons and wings on our posters.

After we had everything figured out, we started drawing our ideas. We had to make a rough draft first and then we used flip chart paper and coloured markers to create our posters.

There was a lot of discussion and team work involved and it took us just over a week to complete our projects.

PTP delivers the academic upgrading component of this four year program, assisting students with college preparation. The graduation ceremony featured students who completed academic upgrading, including the Valedictorian, Laura Hammond. It was a moving ceremony that brought many in the audience to tears. Barbara McFater, Claudia Abello and Lynn Manwar, along with the Acting Chair of Seneca’s Academic Upgrading program, Elise Sheridan, were in attendance for this memorable evening.

Barbara McFater, PTP’s Executive Director, was recently honoured with a Senecans of Distinction Award. This award recognizes the exemplary partnership PTP has developed with Seneca College to deliver Academic Upgrading at PTP’s Danforth location. Now in its fifth year, the Program has exceeded expectations: the number of students served and the number going on to college have been far higher than projected.

Barbara attributes the success to PTP’s fabulous instructors and strong partnership relationships. She thanks Leolyn Hendricks and Elise Sheridan of Seneca College for their strong and enthusiastic support of this partnership between a community-based program and a college and thanks as well WoodGreen’s Homeward Bound program for the role they’ve played in our shared success.
