Are you an assessor/practitioner working with adults to develop their Essential Skills for employment?

This 3 day training will prepare you to administer CAMERA (Communications and Math Employment Readiness Assessment) and use the associated curriculum guidelines (Signposts) and instructional materials (workwrite). You will receive a full package with the materials you need to begin using the CAMERA System right away. For more information about the CAMERA System click here.

The award recognizes organizations which have consistently provided enriching learning experiences via practicum opportunities to students in the Career and Work Counsellor Program, and which have sought to hire students after graduation.

Claudia Abello, PTP’s Director of Operations and manager of Employment Services, accepted the award on behalf of PTP at the award event on March 9.

Mr. Tabuns recently visited PTP’s East Centre on the Danforth and met with our Executive Director Barbara McFater. In his column, he notes that funding for literacy hasn’t increased for a decade yet “benefits to the students are obvious.”

Some key points from Literacy: A Great Investment:

• In Ontario, 42% of adults do not have the literacy skills they need for home, work and life. 1.3 million people (16% of Ontarians) struggle with very serious literacy challenges and have trouble reading even the most basic text. Another 2.1 million people (26%) can read but not well enough to meet the demands of today’s society.
• Increased literacy skills are strongly linked to economic growth and prosperity. A 1% increase in literacy skills would lead to an increase of $18.5 billion per year in Canada’s GDP. Further, literacy is a key component to Canada’s economic recovery and to the future prosperity of our country. Government investment in adult literacy yields substantial economic returns.
• While the high school graduation rate in Ontario has increased from 68% to 75%, still, 25% of young people are dropping out before completing their high school education. In addition, 16% of Ontario students who wrote the grade 10 literacy test in the 2009-2010 school year failed.

PTP’s executive director, Barbara McFater, spoke with the Star about the programs that our learners partake in, and highlighted the effects that the loss of funding would have on those learners.

To date, PTP has provided assessments or delivered training for a number of projects including employees in the health care sector, in public service, in manufacturing and laid off workers at an action centre. So far, it has been a wonderful opportunity for PTP to support employees with their skill development and we are expecting to continue into the new year!!!

PTP and George Brown College Academic Upgrading and are re-launching their joint Pre-Culinary program this October, with practical kitchen training and academic upgrading classes in Math and Communications.

The program is FREE and will welcome 40 students to 2 classes supporting Levels 3-5 and ACE level students. The program is an ideal introduction for students who are interested in pursuing employment, apprenticeship or post-secondary studies in the hospitality sector. Each student will come away with a personalized action plan, experience in an authentic kitchen setting, and course work that will set you on a path to further education or employment! The 13 week program runs from October 18, 2010 to the end of January 2011. Courses will be delivered at Foodshare, located at 90 Croatia Street, near Dufferin Station.

• Working in an authentic kitchen setting
• Safety and nutrition
• Using basic recipes and ingredients

Literacy Skills

• Reading
• Communications
• Numeracy

To qualify you must be:

• Interested in exploring training and/or job opportunities in the food services sector
